LAMEDA x UAL: From “User First” to “People First”

Exploring the Future of Cycling Apparel Through Human-Centered Design

In 2026, LAMEDA officially launched a collaborative design project with UAL Central Saint Martins, bringing together industry expertise and creative exploration to rethink the future of cycling apparel.

The collaboration is built around a shared vision:

How can cycling apparel go beyond performance and truly serve the people who wear it?

For LAMEDA, design has never been simply about creating products. It begins with understanding people — their bodies, their movements, their habits, and the challenges they experience in real riding scenarios.

Through this collaboration, students from Central Saint Martins worked closely with the LAMEDA team to explore a human-centered approach to product innovation, transforming real user insights into new possibilities for cycling design.

From “User First” to “People First”

Traditional product development often begins with a question:

“What product should we create?”

LAMEDA believes the more important question is:

“Who are we designing for?”

This philosophy represents LAMEDA’s long-term commitment to human-centered design.

Great products do not start from assumptions. They start from listening, observing, and understanding.

During this project, students explored real user experiences through:

  • User interviews

  • Field observations

  • Prototype testing

  • Everyday riding research

By studying cyclists’ daily routines and behaviors, the team discovered that cycling apparel is not only about speed and performance.

It is also about:

  • Comfort during long-distance rides

  • Natural movement and body adaptation

  • Better fitting for different body structures

  • Seamless transition between cycling and everyday life

True innovation begins with empathy.

Understanding Real People Behind Every Product

During the research phase, the team identified an important challenge:

Every rider is different.

Different regions and populations have variations in:

  • Body proportions

  • Arm and torso length

  • Leg structure

  • Riding posture

  • Movement patterns

A universal sizing system cannot always provide the perfect experience for every cyclist.

Based on these insights, LAMEDA continues to explore deeper connections between human body data, riding behavior, and apparel design.

Every measurement, every adjustment, and every design decision comes from real riders and real experiences.

Because products should not be created only in the studio.

They should be developed through a dialogue with the people who use them.

From Research to Prototype: A Human-Centered Design Process

The collaboration followed a complete design journey:

01. Research: Understanding the Rider

The first step was discovering the real needs behind cycling.

The team explored:

  • How riders prepare for cycling

  • How they interact with their equipment

  • Where discomfort occurs

  • What improvements they expect from future products

Through conversations and observation, hidden needs behind everyday riding were revealed.

02. Observation: Discovering Details Beyond Data

Some problems cannot be found through numbers alone.

By observing real environments and riding behaviors, the team explored details such as:

  • Where pressure points appear

  • How fabrics respond to body movement

  • How garments adapt to different riding positions

These details define whether a product truly feels natural.

03. Prototyping: Turning Insights into Solutions

Based on research findings, the team created and tested different design concepts.

Each prototype represented a deeper question:

Can this design make riding more comfortable?

Can this structure better follow the human body?

Can cycling apparel become a natural part of everyday life?

Through continuous testing and refinement, ideas gradually evolved into practical solutions.

Designing With Riders, Not Just For Riders

For LAMEDA, innovation is not only about advanced materials or technology.

It is about creating a deeper relationship between people and products.

From professional cycling environments to daily riding scenarios, LAMEDA continues to develop products around authentic human needs.

A great cycling product should not feel like a piece of equipment.

It should feel like an extension of the rider’s body.

Beyond Cycling: Creating a More Natural Active Lifestyle

This collaboration also explores a broader question:

What role should cycling play in modern life?

Today, cycling is no longer limited to competition or training.

It has become:

  • A daily transportation choice

  • A healthier lifestyle

  • A connection between people and cities

  • A way to explore the world

The future of cycling apparel should not be restricted to one specific environment.

Instead, it should naturally integrate into people’s everyday lives.

From Collaboration to Innovation: The Birth of LAMEDA Lab Collection

The collaboration with UAL Central Saint Martins is not only an exchange of ideas.

It is also an important step in LAMEDA’s exploration of future cycling products.

Based on deeper research into human needs, body structures, and real riding scenarios, LAMEDA is currently developing the LAMEDA Lab Collection — a new innovation platform dedicated to exploring the future of cycling apparel.

LAMEDA Lab represents more than a product collection.

It is a space where research, creativity, technology, and user experience come together.

Through LAMEDA Lab, we continue to explore:

  • The relationship between human anatomy and apparel design

  • New possibilities created by advanced materials

  • The integration of performance and everyday lifestyle

  • How professional cycling technology can become accessible to more people

Every LAMEDA Lab product begins with a real question:

How can we create a better experience for riders?

From body measurement and user research, to prototype development and product refinement, every step is driven by genuine human insight.

LAMEDA Lab aims to create not only better cycling equipment, but also a more natural, comfortable, and free cycling lifestyle.
